Alsonia scholaris-saton
     
          
Alstonia scholaris is  evergreen fast -growing tree,that grows upto 40 m tall. Bark is grayish brown, rough  lenticellate abounding bitter in taste secreting white milky latex. Branches are lentocellate,the bark is almost odorless and it is  very bitter. Leaves are simple,whorled,usually 7 in a whorl and dark green. The upper side of the leaves are glossy while the underside is grayish in colour. Flowers  are greenish and white in clusters and it  occurs in early winter season.
Alstonia scholaris are distributed throughout moist regions of India & especially west coast forests. It is also found in all parts of Goa.

Uses:

• The roots and bark are used in traditional medicine to treat astringent tonic, alterative,antidiarrhoeaticum.
• Alstonia are used in the treatment of fever,,chronic diarrhea,dysentery and rheumatic pain 
• The milky juice tree is applied to ulcers.
• The ripe fruit of the plant are used in syphilis and epilepsy.
• The leaves and the latex are applied externally to treat tumor.
• The dried leaves of the alstonia  are used  as a expectorant .
• Powder of dried leaves are used for skin related diseases. 
• Decoction of tender leaves is used for Beri -Beri diseases.
• Latex is also used as a poultice for boils, muscular pains and ear-ache.
